Chemicals that can make your hair weak

Mineral oil:

this comes from petroleum (a crud oil) used in the industry commonly used for lubricating and as a cutting oil. not the best for hair.  However it does coat the skin making it difficult for the skin to breathe (keeps out oxygen).

resulting in dry and hard hair bacterial will form if used in the long run and the scalp will experience low levels of oxygen. the root of the hair would be weakened due to lack of oxygen.

it is also a well known cancer causing agent, (released by the cancer prevention coalition in June 2002.

it is used in almost every cosmetic, shampoos cream ointments, lip gloss and lotions ect… poses the highest exposure public.

when in direct exposure to the sun, the result is premature aging. it contains neurotoxins which damage the nervous system.

also known as CPS it is a silicon based product that adds lubrication, shine, and waterproof the hair.

it is often used in a combination with Dimethicone to provide extra strength, shine, and waterproofing. however, CPS clinical studies that when tested on animals. this produced tumors, endocrine disruption. neurotoxicity (damage to the brain and peripheral nervous system,  organ toxicity (non- reproductive), and skin irritation.

Attaches to hair strand and fills in holes and weak spot to give strength to the hair.  however, when Dimethicone is used in shampoos it fills up the holes preventing the conditioner from repairing the hair strand.

it gives color to cosmetics and personal care items has been shown to cause cancer in animal studies and immune toxicity in high doses.

 Stearyl Achohol:

it keeps the product from separating into dry and oily parts and to keep the foam down when the product is shaken. it is a strong irritant for the eyes. Studies on animals have shown tumor formation when made contact with.

not much data on what Peg-2m does but according to Skin Deep database, it is not safe for damaged or irritated skin. there is evidence of sense organ toxicity.

it helps ingredients dissolve, in mixtures that would not normally dissolve. Studies show that high doses, it does cause cancer & reproductive problems on animals. in moderate doses studies show that animals have organ toxicity.

Benzyl Alcohol:

an external anaglesics, benzyl alcohol is applied to the skin to help relive pain. there is strong evidence that benzyl alcohol causes neurotoxicity in human and is toxic to the organs.

 Citric acid:

it is used as a preserving agent for the product and to keep the PH balance. animal studies show brain, nervous system, respiratory, gastrointestinal, and sense organ  in very low doses.

bonds to metal ion and deactivate them, which prevents the deterioration of the product. it shows positive mutation for cancer cells. in animal studies their were systemic side effects at low doses. Neurotoxicity at moderate doses, reproductive effects at high doses, and is penetration enhancer. as a penetration enhancer it allows the skin to absorb more easily other products and chemicals into the blood stream.

used to protect against bacteria, fungi and yeasts. not only used in shampoos ad detergents, but also used in paints and fuels. the international Agency for research on cancer has not found any carcinogens in it. however it is found to be an allergen.

MIT has been found to affect the nervous system by restricting growth of axon and dendrites in immature nervous cells in rat brains. long term exposure to this chemical showed in studies that it affected the way neurons communicate with each other. used in shampoos to prevent bacterial growth but has been known to be a skin irritant. MIT can only affect the cells it comes in contact with.

 Yellow 5:

used as a dandruff control but known as a cancer causing agent.

EXT Violet 2:

also known as Ext D&C Violet 2 is known cause of tumors and serious skin rashes on lab rats. Prolonged exposure to the chemical can cause depression, convulsions, coma and death. it is also a suspect in causing Leukemia.

 Glutamic Acid:

it is a skin and hair conditioning agent. animal studies show that at very low doses animals experienced cardiovascular effects and respiratory effects. at moderate doses animals experience brain and nervous system side effects.
